The project VillaLab aims to transform the Villa Comunale of Santa Ninfa in a place of aggregation for young people and adults, where they can meet, play sports and relax in the context of a landscape pleasing. A space to rediscover, through workshop activities and moments of discussion and sharing, the essential relationship between the community and the territory, with a view to developing environmental awareness and consciousness. The Municipal Villa was inaugurated on October 2, 2020.

VILLALAB, our space.

The rediscovery and reinterpretation work on the Belice land started in 2018 with the support of APF Foundation and today continue thanks to the synergy between public institutions, local associations and volunteers. The main focus of this partnership is VillaLab,a restoration project but also a trasformation one, because it converts an unused space into a source full of new ideas.

The renovation work is focusing on three areas of interest:

  • the “botanical” rediscovery of the territory, with the “Didactic Herbs Garden” (Didactic Garden of Aromas), an olfactory and sensorial route with more than fifteen varieties of autochthonous aromatic plants. Here you can rediscover the beauty of the local flora, but above all touch, smell and taste firsthand the flavors of this rich land;
  • attention to the needs of children, with the complete replacement of the play area, which will be equipped with new equipment in the name of greater modernity and safety;

  • an area dedicated to sportsmen and women, with the creation of an equipped fitness area and a 400-metre perimeter circuit in which to walk or do jogging.

Santa Ninfa’s Artisans

In addition to the priceless support of the Santa Ninfa city administration, led by the major Giuseppe Lombardino, 13 local firms (including building contractors, nurserymen, technicians and artisans) joined the project and decided to offer their spontaneous collaboration to readjust and secure the whole area. The Santa Ninfa’s artisans have taken care to put back in safety the area, restore the public green space, install a video surveillance system, replenish the play area, refurbish the restroom, replace the street furniture and paint and repair the Villa’s internal stuctures.

The planning and the work progess have been coordinated by the guide of Peppe Bivona, supported by the architect Nicola Pacino, in close cooperation with the district technical representative Vincenzo Monreale.

VillaLab gave life to a strong local artisan’s team which from the beginning they demonstrated a big common involvement spirit and they have been ready to collaborate for a common purpose: make their city more beautiful and comfortable.

A solidarity network

An active part in the project, already in its initial stages, were the local cultural and sports associations. With great dedication and strong knowledge of the area, they have become protagonists, both by actively collaborating in the initial work of readjustment and by creating a full calendar of activities and meetings that will animate VillaLab in the near future.

To donate some of his talent to the VillaLab project was also Fabio Ferrara, known as Hira, an artist from Castelvetrano very sensitive to social issues and always able to capture all the nuances of our beautiful territory.

Hira worked in particular on the central tower of the Villa, creating a real work of street art, able to spread a strong message of environmental sustainability.

Nature is watching you“, this is the title of the work, as well as making the tower a perfectly integral part of the habitat, it succeeds in fact in transmitting, with its vivid and brilliant colors, all the strength and energy of the local fauna.

The depicted animals, with their vigilant and constant gaze, send a strong message to visitors, in the name of greater awareness, sensitivity and respect for the environment and the surrounding nature.
